I am thrilled with this authentic Chana Masala! It's so delicious and easy to make. I love that it contains no animal products. It is perfect for vegan and vegetarian dishes.

What is Chana Masala?

Chana Masala is a classic Indian dish made from chickpeas (sometimes white beans), tomatoes, spices and herbs. It is usually served with rice and/or naan, but it can also be served as an accompaniment to other Indian dishes.

Chana Masala is Hindi. Chana means "chickpeas" and masala means "spice", i.e. "spiced chickpeas".

The best thing about chana masala is that it is very easy and quick to prepare. In addition, it is very healthy and simply tastes delicious. So if you are looking for a healthy and tasty Indian dish, then Chana Masala is for you!

Now if you are wondering what is the difference between chana masala and tikka masala? Quite simply, tikka usually refers to "meat" (meaning a seasoned meat dish). Got it?

  • Peel and roughly chop the onions and garlic.
  • Peel ginger and finely grate.
  • De-seed and finely chop the jalapenos.
  • In a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, melt the ghee and add the whole bay leaves, cumin seeds, and fennel seeds and stir-fry for XNUMX to XNUMX minutes until fragrant.
  • Add onions and fry until golden. Reduce the heat as you do this, as you want to caramelize the onions to add a nice sweetness.
  • Add minced garlic, ginger and diced jalapenos. Fry for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Now add all the other spices. (Garam Masala, Ground Cumin, Coriander, Chili Powder, Fenugreek, Turmeric.
  • Stir once and stir in the canned tomatoes.
  • Add chickpeas and bring to a boil. Add a little water if needed to completely cover the chickpeas. Cover and cook over low heat for 10 minutes. Season with salt.
  • If it tastes bitter or has too much acid in the tomatoes, add a little sugar or honey to balance it out.
  • Taste again and serve.

If you want it spicier, stir in another teaspoon of garam masala.
For more richness and creaminess, stir in a little coconut milk.
